Barbara Loe Fisher is the co-founder and president of the National Vaccine Information Center, the oldest and largest consumer led organization advocating for the institution of vaccine safety and informed consent protections in the public health system.

We’re in the back-to-school mode and with that comes demands by health professionals to have our children vaccinated. Seems obvious, right? After all, we want to protect the health of our children, but when you consider how the vaccination policy has evolved over the past few decades, perhaps there’s reason for concern.

For example, 31 years ago the recommended vaccination schedule included 23 doses of 7 vaccines between 2 months to 7 years of age. These included DPT, MMR and Polio. Today that list includes 69 doses of 16 vaccines between the day of birth and age 18 with 49 doses of vaccines given before age 6.

The numbers for autoimmune and neurological disorders in children are staggering which wasn’t the case 30 years ago. Is there a correlation? Barbara believes there is. She feels that the one-size-fits-all approach to vaccine policy and law making assumes that everyone is genetically, biologically and environmentally the same. The fact is, we’re not the same. Each of us responds differently to pharmaceutical products therefore what we’re seeing is a growing subset of people within the population who are not able to handle this new, aggressive vaccine schedule.

When it comes to vaccines, does government recommended mean government mandated? What are the medical, religious and philosophical exemption options you have in your state? Do you know how to properly report a vaccine reaction? What should you know about the CDC’s vaccine promotion? These and other related concerns are dealt with on this vital edition of Crosstalk.
