Rick Manning is the Vice President of Communication and Public Policy with Americans for Limited Government.
President Obama urged House Republicans this morning to reopen the government in spite of the fact that the U.S. House has voted several times to keep the government open and fully operating and each time the Senate rejects the effort.
Rick began by explaining that the Republicans are attempting to give President Obama, Senator Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi an extra year to get Obamacare pieced together so that it doesn’t turn out to be a complete disaster for the American people. In addition, the Republicans are saying they will fund the government as well. In spite of this, the team of Obama and Reid are saying ‘no’.
What about the accusation that this is an attempt by the G.O.P. to hold the entire economy hostage over their dislike of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare)? In response, Rick pointed out that under a so-called shutdown, only a very small number of government employees actually don’t come to work as their activities are described as ‘nonessential’. In other words, a lot of what’s being said in this regard is little more than ‘political hyperbole’.
Proponents like to call Obamacare ‘the law of the land’. If that’s the case, why aren’t they open to delaying its implementation to consider changes? Is it possible that this system is designed to fail so that more government can be brought in with the hope that this can evolve into a single-payer system? Will the collision between the issue of the government budget vs. the implementation of Obamacare cause citizens to blame the Republicans for the fallout? These questions and more are looked at on this vital edition of Crosstalk.
