The Word of God tells us in 1 Peter 3:15, ‘But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.’ Being equipped to do so is important because in our day skepticism, resistance and outright denial regarding the Bible can come not only from the non-Christian world, but also from within the church as well.

Are you able to stand up for your faith and give a defense for the Word of God? Do you believe in the authority of God’s Word? Are you aware of the evidence that gives the Bible such authority?

Joining Jim to discuss this issue was Carl Kerby. Carl is the president and a founding board member of Reasons for Hope, Inc., an apologetics ministry with a mission to equip believers to fulfill the command found in I Peter 3:15. Carl is also a founding board member of Answers in Genesis where he served for more than 15 years before co-founding Reasons for Hope. Carl is a much in-demand speaker as he travels around the world. He is the author of multiple articles and books including, ‘Remote Control: The Power of Hollywood on Today’s Culture’, ‘Absotively, Posilutely, Best Evidence for Creation’ and Reasons for Hope in the Mosaic of Your Life’.

As a former air traffic controller, Carl had to be able to manage the flight paths of aircraft while doing so ‘by the book’. He used the illustration of a pilot who wants to go to O’Hare airport in Chicago. If the pilot refuses to heed the controller’s directions, the pilot will never arrive at his destination. He looks at the Word of God this way as well. We don’t have to follow God’s Word but if we don’t and decide to follow our own method or route for entrance into heaven, we’ll never get there.

Jim made an interesting observation. He praised Carl for being a ‘fundamentalist’ as it pertains to the safety rules as an air traffic controller and how people are actually happy that as an air traffic controller, Carl was ‘narrow minded’ when it came to following the aviation rules.

So why is there such an acceptance on the part of the people to allow narrow-mindedness when it comes to aviation rules yet when it comes to the authority of Scripture, people are expected to be more ‘open-minded’ regarding issues such as the creation of the universe?

Carl believes it’s because some people have been raised with a mindset that the Bible is ‘good, spiritual, moral type stuff’ but it’s not real history. Carl takes the Bible as historical narrative where it’s historical narrative. Where it’s written as allegory, he takes it as allegory and where it’s written as poetry, he takes it as poetry. This is taking the Bible in context. Unfortunately we have a generation that doesn’t respect God’s Word because they believe science has shown the Bible to be an outdated book.

From there Carl defines what a ‘worldview’ is and how it’s shaped, he presents details concerning his Weapons of Mass Instruction video project, how knowledge gained turns into a weapon for us, evidence within the folds and strata of the earth that line up with Scripture and much more.
