Counselor FAQ’s

How old do I have to be?
All counselors are required to be at least 18 years old.  No exception can be made to this rule.  If you are not 18 years old yet, you may be interested in volunteering for a week or more as a Counselor in Training.  You would be able to assist the head counselor while seeing what all is involved in the Head Counselor position.

What will I be doing for 10 weeks?
The first two weeks will be spent in the classroom while we conduct orientation and training.  You’ll get acquainted with the Trail Ridge property, programs, policies and your peers.  Another vital part of these two weeks will be making final preparations of the facilities and working on various projects around camp.
The following week will be the first week of camp—Family Camp.  During Family Camp, counselors will be in charge of facilitating a morning program for the young campers.  The program will consist of games, crafts, Bible lessons and singing.  The rest of the time, counselors will be helping with general camp operations like kitchen crew, grounds crew and assisting with family activities.
Following family camp will be 5 weeks of youth camps: Kids Kamp for ages 8-13, Lifeline Camp for at risk youth and Teen Camp for ages 14-18.  During those weeks, you’ll be the head counselor for a group of no more than 10 campers.  As a counselor, you’ll be staying in a cabin with your campers and lead them through a week of camp.  You’ll be in charge of cabin devotions and will have the opportunity for one-on-one counseling of your campers in various ways.
Teen camp is followed by a week of Rural Bible Crusade.  RBC is a guest group that does their own cooking, runs their own program and facilitates their own activities.  Counselors will be in charge of housekeeping and grounds keeping.  You’ll have the opportunity to observe how another group “does camp.”  You’ll also be able to see the Conference Center aspect of Trail Ridge and learn about hospitality as it relates to hosting guest groups.
After a week of RBC, counselors will remain at camp for one more week.  This week will be filled with various work projects.  We will also take time during this week to have a few debriefing sessions—sharing what was learned during camp and discussing how we could make improvements to the camp facilities and programs.

When will I need to be at camp?
We ask our counselors to arrive on Monday, June 5, 2017.  A specific time will be given to you upon acceptance.  You’ll be expected to stay until August 12, 2017.

How much money will I make this summer?
Counselors will be paid $300/week (before taxes)—That’s $3,000 for 10 weeks.  You’ll be provided lodging and food during your time at camp too.  If you feel you need to raise extra funds to help pay for your school bill or living expenses the rest of the year, you’ll be provided with some tools to help you raise extra support.  Any extra support you raise will be sent to Trail Ridge, and will be divided equally between each of your pay checks.

What about volunteer counselors?
This new system of acquiring summer-long counselors intends to bring consistency in teaching and programming as well as accountability.  We greatly appreciate our past volunteer counselors, but we desire to have 10 summer-long counselors.  If you are planning on volunteering and would be willing to be a stand-by counselor, select that box on your Volunteer Application.  Stand-by counselors will be used in the case that we don’t have enough counselors for any number of reasons.

I have a previous commitment that would not allow me to be there the entire time?  Can we work something out?
Possibly.  If you are interested in the position, fill out the application.  Disclose the date(s) you will not be available to be at camp, and we will see what we can do.

I still have more questions.  What do I do?
We’d be happy to talk to you.  Either call the camp office at 68-489-3810 or email trailridge@vcyamerica.org.
