The US, European Union, and others are scrambling to negotiate a peaceful solution to the Iranian nuclear standoff. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad meet this week for the first time in two years, amid Palestinian threats to bring their statehood bid back to the United Nations.

Why the return to peace talks now, when they have failed so many times before? Is there new information that we don’t know about?

Mr. Rubin says the real issue is what is happening with Iran, not the Palestinians. Ever since the first meeting between Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Obama, it has been obvious there is a huge disagreement about how Iran should be treated. Mr. Obama wants Iran to understand that we do not consider them an enemy. Mr. Netanyahu says that the very real threat of nuclear weapons in Iran, coupled with Iran’s stated desire to destroy Israel, cannot be anything but the actions of an enemy.

As a result, the Obama administration is pressuring Israel to delay any attack on Iran until at least 2013. Israel considers any delay to be putting off the inevitable. They believe that a strike against Iran earlier rather than later could minimize the scope and effects of such a conflict.

Other factors are the Iranian surrogate terrorist organizations, including Hamas and Hezbollah, plus current changes in Egypt that will make that country more antagonistic towards Israel.

Behind the scenes, the Obama administration is pushing for progress towards a Palestinian state—despite his stated desire to delay such efforts until after the U.S. Presidential election in November. Rubin says if Obama is re-elected, the result will be “disaster”, as his record of pro-Islamic, anti-Israeli actions could continue with no concern about re-election.
