Dr. Steven Camarota serves as the director of research for the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington, DC based research institute that examines the consequences of legal and illegal immigration on the United States. Dr. Camarota has testified before Congress more than any other non-government expert on the economic and fiscal impact of immigration.
It’s estimated that there are 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States. This indicates that our borders are porous. Just how porous? Dr.Camarota pointed out that although we’re not 100% sure, recent satellite and radar analysis shows that about half of the people who try to get in do so successfully.
The border situation is only the beginning as there are many items to consider when discussing the immigration reform controversy. Dr. Camarota examined this subject carefully as he answered the following questions:
–What happened to the border fence idea?
–Are illegals educated enough to be considered a legitimate threat to job seeking citizens?
–What are the effects of illegal immigrants on public education?
–Do illegal immigrants provide a challenge for crime and law enforcement?
–How would giving illegals amnesty make those feel who became citizens “by the rules”?
–What will be the verification elements of the new immigration bill that’s being worked on?
Dr. Camarota feels the bill will be actively debated in the Senate in about 3 to 4 weeks so senators need to hear from their constituents soon.
