Larry Pratt is the executive director of Gun Owners of America. He is the author of ‘On the Firing Line: Essays in the Defense of Liberty.’ Larry has also held elective office in the state legislature of Virginia, serving in the House of Delegates.
Yesterday the U.S. Senate voted 53-46 in favor of eliminating the funding to Planned Parenthood. However, this vote fell short of the necessary 60 votes needed to end debate. Larry commented by noting that he feels Mitch McConnell has behaved in an appalling fashion. He feels McConnell is ‘all in’ for whatever the Democrats want. In fact, as Jim noted, McConnell had the opportunity to bring an amendment about that would have allowed the funding elimination to pass with just a simple majority. For that reason, Larry feels that McConnell should get an annual award from Planned Parenthood.
Regarding the main topic, Jim reported yesterday that a Navy official told Fox News that punishing a Lieutenant Commander who used an unauthorized weapon to fire back at the Chattanooga gunman who shot and killed 5 service members could not be completely ruled out. Larry thinks that pressure being placed upon the Navy is having a positive effect and that charges may not be pressed against this man.
Larry also commented on another report Jim presented yesterday about an Obama administration plan to ban Social Security beneficiaries from owning guns if they lack the mental capacity to manage their own affairs. Larry cautioned listeners that if someone is tired of doing their own paperwork and decides to have someone else write their checks, under this administration’s plan, this could set the individual up for a visit from the ATF.
Can the Obama administration initiate this without congressional approval? According to Larry, President Obama realizes that the Republican leadership is absolutely unwilling to confront him since that might involve a government slowdown or perhaps shutting down one or more departments and that terrifies those running the U.S. Congress Republican caucuses. So he doesn’t see any change coming until we see some more people like Ted Cruz and Mike Lee in the Senate and their counterparts in the House.
Jim also had Larry comment on the following:
–The push by the Obama administration to initiate mental health screenings and if there is a ‘tie-in’ to gun control.
–President Obama feels distressed and stymied over his inability to get gun control passed through Congress and he’s going to ‘double-down’ on these efforts during his remaining time in office.
–The potential rewriting of regulation that could give the State Department wide ranging power to monitor and control gun related speech on the Internet.
–Senator Chuck Schumer and his new, proposed legislation that could change the background check system to keep violent criminals, domestic abusers and the mentally ill from too easily obtaining guns and using them to kill.
–The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously on a measure that would prohibit the use of firearm magazines that hold more than ten rounds.
–What should people be looking for as it relates to presidential candidates and where they stand on Second Amendment issues?
–Does the Bible talk about self-defense?
